Sam Winchester looked down at his PDA. He knew he’d told his brother Dean that he’d severed all connections with his friends from college, and he had, all but one. Alexa Preston had been his best friend; they had met during their psyche 101 class freshman year. She was the one person at school that Sam had trusted enough to reveal his secret. Alex knew everything about Sam’s childhood and he updated her regularly on all the things he hunted, he even used her as a source for information sometimes.
Ever since Alex has heard Sam was hunting again she read any supernatural based book she could get her hands on. She would never hunt the things herself but she had become a fountain of knowledge on the things that went bump in the night. Her latest e-mail had Sam worried a little.
Sam,
I have a small problem which falls under your area of expertise. Could you do me a favour and stop by my apartment in Baltimore?
Hope to see you soon.

“Found anything?” Dean asked, climbing into the driver’s side of his Chevy Impala.
“Maybe, there might be something in Baltimore.”
“Oh yeah, what is it?”
“Don’t know yet,” Sam shrugged.
“What do you mean you don’t know yet?”
“I’m working on it,” Sam answered, busily typing his answer to Alex.
“What are you doing Sam?” Dean demanded, annoyed by his brother’s cryptic answers.
“I told you I’m working on it.”
“Fine, looks like we’re headed to Baltimore then.”

Three hours later they had just entered the Baltimore city limits when Sam’s cell went off. He grabbed it out of his pocket and answered quickly, somehow knowing it was Alex.
“Hello?”
“Sam? Sam its Alex.”
“Alex is something wrong?” Sam asked, noting the her terrified tone. “What’s going on?”
“I’m scared Sam,” Alex cried.
“Where are you?”
“In my apartment,” Alex moaned. “There’s something here Sam, something’s after me. It’s outside my bedroom, I’ve blocked off all the exits with salt. Please Sam, you have to help me!”
“I’m coming Alex, we’ll be there in about ten minutes all right,” Sam said in a calming tone.
“Please hurry Sammy.”
The phone went dead and Sam put it back in his pocket. Alex was like a sister to him, she was one of the nicest people Sam had ever met. Nothing ever seemed to surprise of scare him anymore, but the terror he’d heard in Alex’s voice scared him to no end.
“Drive faster Dean.”
“Mind telling me what’s going on here Sammy?”
“I got an e-mail from an old friend of mine asking me to stop by. Said there was a problem I might be able to help with,” Sam explained. “Alex just called, said there was something in the apartment. We have to hurry Dean.”
“This Alex person knows what we can do I take it?”
“Yes, take your next right, it the first apartment complex on the left.”
As soon as the Impala stopped Sam flung open the door and climbed out, grabbing what he needed from the trunk he hurried into the building. Not wanting to take the chance that the lift may take too long Sam took the stairs two at a time. Alex’s apartment was on the fourth floor.
Dean caught up to his brother just as he was trying the front door, unsurprisingly it was unlocked. Guns, loaded with rock salt, at the ready Sam swung the door open and the pair entered the apartment. There was nothing in the small living room/kitchen, but it was obvious something had been there. Everything was in disarray, chairs were overturned, and books, dishes and ornaments littered the floor.
Moving slowly and quietly, Sam led the way down a small hall to where he guessed Alex’s bedroom was. At the end of the hall was a door that look as if it had taken a severe beating. Something had been desperate to get into that room. Satisfied there was nothing supernatural in the apartment any longer, Sam lowered his gun and knocked on the locked door.
“Alex, it’s me, open the door.”
There was a flurry of movement on the other side of the door and Sam heard the lock click. Dean was then surprised as a young pretty brunette, clutching a iron poker, opened the door and flung herself into Sam’s waiting arms. She was a small woman, who only came up to Sam’s shoulder. Crying hysterically, she buried her face in Sam’s chest and clung to him tightly.
“It’s all right Alex,” Sam soothed, stroking her hair. “I’m here now; nothing’s going to hurt you.”
“I was so scared,” Alex sobbed, still clinging to Sam.
“Alex, this is my brother Dean,” Sam introduced them once Alex had calmed down. “We’re going to do everything we can to help you, but you’ll need to tell us everything that’s happened.”
“It’s Matt,” she whispered as they moved back into the living room.
